Summer is officially here and the heat has already exceeded triple digits. Putting on sunscreen and staying hydrated are just two of many safety tips to remember this Memorial Day. Whether you are hosting a barbecue, attending a pool party, or going on a road trip, remember to take care and use caution.
Staying Safe in the Water
Whether you are in a pool or a lake, make sure that no one is ever left alone in the water. Children and adults alike should practice the buddy system. Stay close to your children when they are swimming and make sure another adult watches the water if you have to briefly step away.
If you are boating this memorial day, remember that no one should go on a boat without a lifejacket. Furthermore, it is against the law and very dangerous to operate a boat while under the influence of alcohol. Stay sober, use a spotter, and dock your boat if the lake becomes too congested because of the holiday festivities.
If you are going to the ocean, stay with your group. Never swim out beyond the reach of your friends and swim in areas where there are lifeguards present. If you are caught in a rip current, try to stay calm and swim parallel to the shore until you are out of it. If you are not a confident swimmer, stay on the beach. The Pacific can be quite dangerous.
Remember, there will be a number of people on the roadway who have travelled great distances from parties. This means that there will be a number of drivers who are potentially fatigued and under the influence. Travel at safe speeds, have a navigator in the front seat helping you watch for erratic drivers, and pull over if you feel tired.
