Putting up decorations for the holidays can be fun, but it is can also be a huge hassle. If you didn’t carefully organize your decorations last year when you put everything away, you may not even know where to find your holiday decorations. Instead of enjoying some holiday music while decorating, you may find yourself in a closet or attic frantically searching for that one box that could be anywhere. This year, have a plan so that you can spend less time searching and storing and more time celebrating.
Color code your boxes
Labeling your storage containers is useful, but you still have to take the time to read all the labels to find your decorations. Instead, buy some color-coded boxes and lids. This way, you’ll know to look for the red and green containers next year. Maybe you can put your ornaments and indoor lights in one color container and your outdoor decorations in another. You’ll know exactly what is in each box next year without having to open everything up.
Keep a record and inventory
Make a list of things that are in a box and then tape that list to the inside of the lid. Then, you can open up a box and read the list. You will never again have to rummage through a box that may not even contain what you are looking for.
Group your boxes together
Try to keep all of your holiday decoration boxes together. Strong storage containers are easily stackable, so you can create small towers of decorations that go together. Imagine looking into your attic or storage space and seeing a small stack of orange bins with your Halloween decorations and a couple stacks of red and green boxes containing your holiday decorations. Clustering similar items saves time and energy.
Consider storing seasonal items elsewhere
Even the most organized people can run out of space quickly. If your closet, attic or garage is filling up, you might want to consider a storage unit. You won’t need your holiday decorations for another 11 months, so you might as well free up the clutter and move your seasonal items to a safe, secure and affordable storage unit.
