Key Points of the California Self-Service Storage Facility Act

Every day, each and every California resident, organization, and business must conduct themselves in accordance with the laws and regulations set forth in California’s code, and self-storage facilities are no exception. At STORBOX, our self-storage company in Pasadena takes pride in conducting our business ethically and in accordance with the California Self-Service Storage Facility Act as stipulated in the state’s Business and Professions Code.

Because not many people are aware that such a thing exists, we thought we would offer up some of the Act’s key points:

  • The act applies to all “real property designed and used for the purpose of renting or leasing individual storage space” to people who access the space for storing and/or removing personal belongings, or for storing individual storage containers provided for a person’s exclusive use.
  • A self-service storage facility cannot be used as a residence. This seems obvious, but it was written into the Act for a reason. Perhaps after Lewis moved into a storage unit in an episode of The Drew Carey Show it became a new trend.
  • The owner or operator of a self-service storage facility, as defined by the Act, may (with a permit) transport individual storage containers to and from the facility for a fee, which cannot exceed $100. The owner, operator or carrier may not handle the contents of the container and must have cargo insurance of at least $25,000 per shipment.
  • The owner of a self-service storage facility has a lien on all the personal property being stored for rent, late payment fees, labor and any other charges in accordance with the rental agreement. If you don’t pay, the owner can sell your personal belongings to resolve the bill.
