(Cue creepy music)
Self-storage has many uses; people store their holiday decorations, seasonal clothes, old furniture (just to be clear, I don’t mean haunted old furniture), and even mementos and priceless trinkets of nostalgia. But these (normal) things are not the only possessions people store.
(Cue more creepy music)
It was raining and alligators were maliciously wandering (well, probably) in Florida, when an innocent self-storage manager was going to auction off the contents of an unpaid storage unit. (One of the reasons you shouldn’t fall behind in rent). But when he notified the owner, he was told not to. Why? Because, the storage unit held a secret, and that secret was… (cue creepy music)…the owner’s dead grandmother, in a homemade blue coffin. (You can make up your own Twilight Zone twist).
Yes, this did in fact happen, and because someone’s dead grandmother was actually stored in their self-storage unit, you have to wonder what other strange things people store. Obviously, a dead loved one is one of those things that should never be put into self-storage (like I even need to say that out loud), but there are many other things that may be strange but could be stored in a self-storage unit (without inciting horror and the Twilight Zone music). Let’s brainstorm a few:
- Taxidermy animal collection;
- A pile of mattresses with a single pea underneath;
- A model of Stonehenge;
- A spinning wheel, a pile of hay, and smaller pile of gold thread;
- Piles of pillows;
- A life-size Mouse Trap game or other Rube Goldberg-type puzzle;
- Cases of bowling pins;
- A bunch of open cages; and
- Wax replicas of every Pope.
