Taking a midnight stroll down your college football field all those years ago—a field you never once set foot on otherwise—your future was so full of wonder and opportunity. You were one of the lucky few to land a job right after college, in a job field you studied and enjoyed. Who knew that was even possible? As you worked your way up in your career, you were also smart enough to invest in a 401k. We’re not jealous at all!
You always dreamed of retiring at 55 and taking a grand trip across the continental U.S. like every other red-blooded American. You got married, had beautiful children, and received a promotion every couple of years. Your life was truly an American Dream. All that was left was to set out on a great escape across the continent, taking photos with novelty statues and sending postcards to the rest of your family.
At 45, everything seemed like a done deal, so you bought yourself an RV. It’s a nice one, with bunkbeds, a fridge, and even a little stove. You just had to wait for your kids to start their own journeys and leave the house, like you had seen in the movies.
Only… that’s not how things are happening. The economic ups and downs of late had different plans. Your 25-year-old son is still living in your house, interning for the third year in a row. But hey, this could be the year for advancement, he can feel it! We have our fingers crossed.
Your other children need a lot more financial support than you ever planned for, too. As it turns out, your health insurance couldn’t cover your daughter after her 26th birthday, and her part-time job as a yoga instructor just doesn’t pay enough for her to afford living on her own AND paying for health insurance. Then there’s your youngest. He was accepted into an out-of-state university, but he needs a little help getting through. Room and board ain’t cheap these days.
So, maybe retirement will have to wait a couple years (at least, you hope that it’s just a couple). Plus, the RV is taking up too much space in your driveway and your kids need parking. What are you going to do now?
