The winter holidays would not be complete without joyful holiday decorations, and a Christmas tree is never complete without its colorful ornaments. Trimming the tree with lights, garlands, passed down family heirloom ornaments and the new ornaments you just bought last year are a large part of the holiday fun during Christmas. But what is the best way to store those ornaments after the tree comes down?
Every year, people open up their ornament boxes to find shiny and colorful pieces of broken ornament and wonder how it broke in the box. Unless they are stored away properly, ornaments (unless they are plastic) can easily shuffle around and break, even if they are in a boxed set. In order to avoid finding broken pieces of ornament next year, follow these few tips:
- Never stack individual ornament packs on top of one another loosely on a shelf in the basement, attic, or even your self-storage unit. They can be knocked off the shelf too easily, plus, we live in earthquake country. Box your ornament boxes and stack no more than two high (on the floor) for safety.
- Box ornament packs snuggly. Fill in empty spaces with your colorful used tissue paper or packing paper if necessary. If they can move around, they can break.
- All special ornaments, such as irregularly shaped ones or ones that have been passed down generation to generation and have sentimental value, should be individually wrapped (tissue paper, bubble wrap, newspaper, etc.) and placed in their own box, or one with dividers similar to boxes for wine glasses and other glassware.
These tips may seem like common sense, but with all the business of the holiday season, some could do with a quick reminder.
