Your wedding day is one of the most special times in your life. Not only do friends and family get to see you proclaim your love to your partner, but they get to see “The Dress.” TV shows and magazines are devoted to wedding dresses. The wedding dress is a big deal. So, of course you want to keep it safe, not just for your own nostalgic memories. You might want it to be a new heirloom passed down to other brides in the family.
Here are a few tips to keep the dress looking ready to wear long after the “I do”:
- Get the dress professionally cleaned— The first thing you want to do is make sure your dress is in its best condition. Taking out the dress in twenty years with your daughter and finding a stain could ruin your plans to hand it down. Stains can get more noticeable over time. For example, a stain with sugar in it will turn brown on your white dress over time. Take the dress to a quality dry cleaner that will clean it and press it for you.
- Invest in some muslin— Here’s another good tip that’s not common knowledge: wrapping the dress in an unbleached muslin fabric will keep your dress from yellowing over time. The fabric will act as a protection from the elements that would harm your dress. Muslin isn’t very expensive and can wind up saving you in the long run.
- Put the dress in a box— Hanging your dress in a garment bag is a good way to store your dress, but not the best way. To keep fabric safest, we recommend boxing it up. Plastic garment bags can cause yellowing of fabrics. What’s best for your dress is to lay it as flat as possible in a box. (And don’t forget the muslin.)
- Pick a good storage unit— The last step might be the most important. Choosing a safe, dry, temperature-controlled space will keep your dress looking good for years.
