Tips for Storing Artwork

Pasadena Self StorageIt doesn’t matter if you are an avid art collector or someone who has only a couple valuable paintings. You must store your collection properly for it to retain its beauty and value. Paintings are delicate and vulnerable. Heat, physical contact, and humidity can cause significant damage to old and new paintings alike. This is why many collectors and painters rely on climate controlled storage units to keep their paintings safe and secure.

Control the Temperature

Perhaps the most important factors to consider when storing artwork are temperature and humidity. When the temperature changes dramatically, it can crack or warp the paintings. When searching for the right storage facility, make sure to inquire about climate control options. Ideally, you will find a climate-controlled unit that will keep the room around 70 degrees Fahrenheit and the humidity around 40 to 50 percent.

Prep Your Art

Before moving the art into your new storage unit, it will need to be prepared for transportation and storage. You should wrap your paintings in material that will protect them from scratches, dust, and bugs. Make sure the wrap is loose enough so that air can circulate. Tissue paper and breathable sheets are better options than plastic or bubble wrap that can block circulation and trap condensation. Restricted air flow and trapped humidity can cause water damage.

Art Transportation

You may want to hire a professional to transport your artwork for you. If you plan on moving the art on your own, consider large wooden frames and boxes. Foam pipe insulators are often ideal to protect the edges of your art as well. Just remember that your pieces should not be transported if it is cold or wet outside.

Proper Storage

After packaging and transporting, you will need to shelve the art. When this is not possible, pallets and wooden slats should be used to keep your art off the ground. Sensitive pieces can crack and puncture if they are not stacked properly. So avoid placing too many pieces on top of each other. Instead, store them vertically, from smallest to largest.
