A disorganized garage can fill up quickly. It doesn’t take long before you start losing things and there is no longer space to pull your car inside. If your garage is starting to become a place where you just throw belongings you don’t have room for in your home, it may be time to roll up your sleeves and get to work. You’ll need a plan, plenty of space and some elbow grease.
Park your car on the street, open up your garage door and get ready to utilize your garage and driveway space to sort through your belongings. Once you have enough room, start making piles. Put all your lawn equipment, sporting gear and gardening tools in their own heaps. Hopefully as you start to create piles you will begin to find items you no longer need. It can help to have one pile for belongings you would like to donate, another for items that can be recycled and a third for things you are ready to throw out.
Before you start moving items back into your garage, think about adding shelves, cabinets and storage bins. If you can stack items and get them off the floor, it will leave more space to walk around in your garage. Moving your items off the floor will also protect them in case you ever have flooding issues in your garage. You can find relatively cheap but sturdy shelving units that can easily fit in the back and side of your garage.
As you move your items back in, think about where you put them. Keep in mind how often you use each item and which ones you need easy access to. The more you plan ahead, the more functional your garage will become.
Need More Room?
You may find that after getting organized, you still cannot easily access all of your belongings. If this is the case, it may be in your best interest to look into local storage units.
