You may know of Bottle Shock as a movie that came out in 2008 based on the 1976 wine competition referred to as the “Judgment of Paris,” where California wine defeated French wine in a blind taste-test, but bottle shock, or “bottle sickness,” is an actual condition that could create muted or disjointed fruit flavors, flat flavors and aroma, or even an off-putting odor. Additionally, the tannins and alcohol can taste sharper and overwhelming. But, have no fear! Bottle shock is temporary and all your wine needs is some time to rest. Luckily, The Wine Grotto at STORBOX Self-Storage in Pasadena has the perfect spot for your wine!
Causes of Bottle Shock
Bottle shock is a reaction that occurs immediately after corking, due to oxygen absorption during bottling, as the result of adding sulfur dioxide during bottling, or as the result of being jostled or shaken, usually during transport. If you have seen the movie Bottle Shock, the Sommelier taking California wines back to France asked other passengers on the airplane if they would carry a bottle or two so that they wouldn’t be packed into the cargo hold, where they would surely be shaken about.
A Cure for Bottle Shock
Fortunately for all the wine lovers out there, especially those who have wine shipped to them, bottle shock is temporary. There are no set rules for how long wine must be allowed to rest for the shock to wear off. It depends on the grape variety, wine style, venting process, bottle-size, cellar conditions, etc. But this does not mean we can’t give you a time frame. To be safe, you should let the wine rest for two to three months.
