There is more to wine collecting than simply keeping some of your favorite bottles on a shelf. Fine wines need to be stored properly. You can ruin a fine wine by making a simple mistake, but wine storage isn’t that complicated once you have a basic understanding of some do’s and don’ts. To help you avoid making a few expensive mistakes, here are a few tips to remember as you start your collection.
Regulate the Temperature
Perhaps the most important part of wine storage is creating a stable and consistent environment for your collection. Ideally, your wine will be kept at the same temperature, all the time. Large fluctuations in temperature can prematurely age your wine. Your wine may age too quickly in heat and too slowly in the cold. Try to house your wine somewhere between 50 and 59 degrees.
The most expensive wines tend to age longer. Opening them up too soon will affect how they taste. A simple online search may be all that is needed to determine when your wine will be ready for consumption. The cheapest wines may be ready right away, but the best wines in your collection will need time.
Avoid the Sun
Light can cause significant damage to your wine. Keep your collection in a relatively dark location like your cellar or closet. If you do not have a dark, climate controlled space in your home, consider a storage unit. Your wine should be nowhere near windows that will cause your wine to heat and cool throughout the day.
Lay Your Wine Down
Wines with wood corks need to be stored on their sides. If the cork is not in contact with the wine, it may dry out and shrivel. A dry, shrunken cork may let air seep in, resulting in oxidation.
Remember to Have Fun
It can be stressful to worry about whether or not you are storing your wine correctly. This is why many collectors choose to keep their wines in a climate-controlled space at a storage facility. This way they don’t have to think about humidity, temperature or sunlight. They only have to enjoy their wine when it is ready.
