While preparing wines for storage it is important to know which wines are ready to drink within a few months and those that need more time to properly age.
If you are interested in short-term wine storage, you will want to select wines that are ready to drink within six months of purchase. And though these wines may not be stored for longer durations, it is still necessary to keep them in the right conditions for retaining and/or improving their quality and taste.
How to Store Short-Term Wines
The crucial requirement for wine storage, whether it is for the short-term or long-term, is to create and maintain an environment where the temperature and humidity levels are kept as even as possible. Ideally, the wine storage space will remain between 50 and 59 degrees Fahrenheit. Even wines that are only stored for a few months can age prematurely if subject to periodic or high temperature fluctuations. You should also keep your wine storage area free from odor. When the cork is exposed to different smells, it can affect the taste of the wine.
You may not need a large wine cellar if you only plan on keeping the wines for a short period of time. The most optimal way to keep such a collection free of changes in temperature is to use a dedicated wine cooler refrigerator. These come in different sizes and they allow for wines to rest on their side, so that they are properly sealed while in constant contact with the cork. If you do not want to purchase a wine refrigerator, you may keep your wines in a cool location and away from light, such as inside a closet or in a corner of your basement.
Controlling the conditions of a storage space where wines will be kept long term becomes even more critical. Again, temperatures that are too high will age the wine prematurely. Storage spaces that are too cold will stunt the flavor. You will also want to control the humidity of the location. Humidity of 70 percent or even higher will keep the corks from drying out and will prevent issues with evaporation.
